White Sands National Monument
to Texas
March 21, 2015
We started out from our camp at Rockhound State Park and drove to White Sands National Monument. This was our first visit to this park and we really liked it. The sand was so white it was almost blinding, really neat.
We walked the boardwalk trail and drove through the park. People were using snow sleds to slide down the dunes, really fun to watch! There were a number of nice picnic areas and hiking trails to explore. We climbed to the top of one of the dunes and played around for a while. Ruth made a sand angel and we ran and rolled down the dunes. A great time!!
After leaving White Sands we drove into the great state of Texas to do some more exploring. We stopped in at Chamizal National Memorial, what a scam that was. A National Memorial celebrating a terrible deal that gave a bunch of land back to Mexico and displaced thousands of homes and businesses. They even had some voluenteers to explain that it was Mexican land to begin with and it was just right to return it. The giant mural of Obama on the wall was awesome too. I had to run away before I screamed. We finished the day by driving to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, hitting more rain along the way. It started to clear up pretty quickly and we were treated to a rainbow!
