Chiricahua
National Monument
March 20, 2015
After a rainy and windy night in the tent we caught the early shuttle at the Chiricahua visitor center and got a ride to Massai Point for the start of our hike.
The weather was beautiful after the rains we had dealt with for days. After getting dropped at the trail head we started down into the valley through the amazing rock formations the park is known for.
We loved the start of the hike past some huge formations. We walked below Mushroom Rock then climbed up through the canyon to the Inspiration Point trail. The view from Inspiration Point was amazing as promised.
One of the highlights of the day was Big Balanced Rock, it was hard to believe. How does this giant rock not fall??
The Heart of Rocks Loop was our next destination. Absolutely stunning! There were an unbelievable number of interesting formations. I took pictures of my favorites, but "Duck on a Rock" took the prize!!
After finishing our hike we jumped back in the car to see a few more of the tourist spots in the park that could be reached by car. Along the way we got to see the illusive Coatimundi!!! We had been looking for this cute little critter for days. We then drove 2o miles on a rough but beautiful dirt road to the border of New Mexico near Portal, AZ. These folks have found themselves a slice of paradise. What beautiful country.. We ended up camping in Rockhound State Park in New Mexico. As we found on the entire trip, New Mexico has by far the best sunsets.
