2014 Oregon Road Trip
Day 3
For today I had my sight set on Union Peak, a major summit in Crater Lake National Park.
This was much more of an undertaking than the previous days hike and so I got an early start again. The hike is advertised at the steepest climb in all of Southern Oregon.
You get a great view of the summit block and the steep portion of the trail as you approach the peak. The climbing is tough but pleasant and the view from the top is awesome.
After the climb, I drove around to a couple of overlooks to enjoy the view. The sky was blue today, so I got to see the deep blue that the lake is famous for
I went to my favorite sunset viewing spot in the park, getting there early to beat the crowds. This is the spot that the cover photo on my website was taken years ago. I enjoyed a fine cigar and my audio book while I made some dinner and waited for the sun to set. I had to bundle up quickly, it got super cold!! The sunset was not as awesome as the one that I had seen on my first visit to this spot, but it was worthy of a king. I love this park.
