2014 Oregon Road Trip
Day 2
Today I had a goal of doing 2 summits I had never climbed, and I was able to make that happen.
I started on the Crater Peak trail first thing in the morning.
The view from the summit was nice, but not overwhelming. There was a nice flat spot so I stopped and had a snack. On the way back down I came across a small lightning fire that had been smoldering for a long time, I had never seen one of these up close before. It had burned out the entire trunk of the tree that had been hit and was slowly spreading to the surrounding brush. I made a note of the location with the intention of notifying the park, but I passed a crew of fire fighters on the trail and told them where to find it.
After getting back to the car, I made a quick stop at Vidae Falls to snap some pictures and have lunch.
Next stop was Llao Rock, a highpoint on the rim of Crater Lake that promised to offer some amazing views. I was not disappointed, it was spectacular! The clouds were blowing right over my head and the lake was beautiful.
The hike down was easy and interesting with great views. I made good time and got back the the car quickly. After stopping for some local beers I got a little crazy with the fire and had an awesome night!
