Day 1
Death Valley with Saige
4-26-14
The first day of my 2014 Desert Road Trip started out with an unexpected couple of inches of snow and a wild drive. It was so windy on my drive down that I passed multiple big rigs tipped over right on the freeway. It was pretty wild. I also hit rain and snow on the highway. I finally arrived at Mahogany Flat Campground around 9 pm and set up camp in a snow storm by the light of my car headlights. Not what I had in mind...
Saige was supposed to meet me at the campground in the morning, but I woke up to a couple inches of snow. The road up to the camp is dirt and very steep, I knew he wouldn't make it up. So I slipped and slid down the road to the Charcoal Kilns where I made some breakfast and waited for Saige to arrive. It was a cold but beautiful morning and I was in desert heaven.
He arrived about an hour later and went for a bit of a Death Valley road trip. We started at Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America. We then checked out the main tourist areas in the park.
After driving around for a couple of hours, we made our way back to camp and relaxed with some cigars to catch up. There was an amazing view from the camp and we climbed a tree to make it even better. It got really cold so we went to bed early.
