Rattlesnake Bar to Mormon Inlet
2-15-12
The total stats for my day of hiking were:
5.25 miles
780 feet of climbing
I had a small section of the trail left to explore on the west side of the lake and a pair of boots to break in, so I decided to head out on the trail and accomplish some things today. Rattlesnake Bar is closed this time of year due to low water levels and low traffic, but there is a nice parking area just outside the gate. It is a short walk to the trail, and well marked in both directions. I headed north to complete this section to Mormon Inlet, about 2.5 miles away. It was a bit windy today but otherwise beautiful, a perfect day for a hike! The first section of trail is pretty open and affords good views of the lake.
The trail quickly climbs and enters the trees. It would be a wonderful hike during a hot summer day, and there is a nice pond about a mile in with picnic tables. The trail contours high above the lake due to a steep shore line, this section of beach is impassable.
There is a hydro plant at Mormon Inlet operated by PG&E. When I was here a couple of weeks ago the water was trickleing from the outlet grate, today it was rushing! Good thing we are starting to get some rain and snow in the high country!!
